skills and courage of two traditional warrior groups who are to
catch an antelope live from a nearby forest and present it to the
paramount chief who sits in state. The animal is sacrificed to ensure

"Bakatue" Festival

The festival symbolizes the beginning of the fishing season. Bakatue
also commensurate the founding of the Edina (Elmina) town of the
Central Region. It is celebrated annually on the first Tuesday of
July. A colourful regatta of canoes on the Brenya Lagoon and procession
of chiefs and people highlights the celebrations. A solemn 'net
casting' ceremony symbolises the beginning of a new fishing season
and the catch is offered to the deities of the area. This programme
is popular with the African Americans

Overview
Annual warriors festival celebrated by the people of Ada in the
Greater Accra Region from the last Thursday of July to the first
weekend of August. It commensurate the conquest of the territory
during the 17th century by the ancestors of the inhabitants. The
historic events are re-enacted with warriors dressed in traditional
battle dress engaging in mock battles. The event also ushers in
the harvest cycle for which special customs and ceremonies are performed
including purification rites with a climax of durbar of chiefs and
people accompanied by traditional military groups called "Asafo
Companies" amidst drumming and dancing. The chiefs exchange greetings
and libation is poured with the declaration of allegiance.

Overview
Celebrated in August/September by the Gas of Accra to commerate
bardships endured during their migration, which was followed by
a bumper harvest in grain and fish. The main highlight of the month
long festival is a special dish prepared from ground corn, steamed
and mixed with palm oil soup. Prayer for a peaceful and prosperous
year are offered amidst drumming, dancing and sprinkling of the
festival meal "kpokpoi" by the chief accompanied by the pouring
of libation at ancestral shines, cemeteries and religious sites
to venerate and praise their ancestors.

Celebrated annually on the first Saturday of September in Cape Coast
traditional are and characterized by a durbar of Chiefs, a procession

every member adorned in rich and colourful clothes, some of which
depict a fusion of Fante and European cultures sustained over the
years. Customary rites are performed for the seventy- Seven 77 deities
of the area for their blessings.

"Hogbetsotso"(Exodus Festival)

Overview
Celebrated on the first Saturday in November to commemorate the
successful exodus of the Anlo people from captivity in Notsie in
Togo by walking backwards out of the clutches of tyrannical ruler.
The ceremony include peace making periods where outstanding problems
are resolved, purification of traditional stool, period of general
cleaning, durbar where chiefs dress in colourful regalia, sit in
state to receive homage from subjects followed by several merry
making and re-enactment of the exodus.

Overview
This festival is based on the annual calendar of the people of Ashanti,
which is divided into nine cycles of forty-two (42) days. Each cycle
is the occasion of a celebration held on Sunday, the purpose of
which is to pay homage to the Ashanti ancestors. The festival is
associated with remarkable durbars of chiefs bedecked in gold ornaments
amidst drumming and dancing. This festival is a spectacular memorial
to honour ancestral spirits.
